Apparently figuring there’s money to be made from dystopia, Imagine Entertainment (“The Hunger Games“) is planning a remake of the granddaddy of all dystopian sci-fi books, George Orwell’s “1984,” ComingSoon reports this morning.
The book, published in 1948, has become a touchstone for politicians and required reading for high school kids across these United States. It’s quoted so often that it’s almost descended into parody. Imagine has apparently teamed with street artist Shepard Fairey (best known for those Barack Obama “Hope” posters) and he may serve as a producer, ComingSoon reports.
The book was last brought to the big screen, appropriately enough, in 1984, with John Hurt in the lead as the tormented protagonist Winston Smith.
In pursuit of the rights, Imagine teamed with street artist Shepard Fairey (best known for the now-iconic Barack Obama “Hope” campaign poster) and Fairey may now serve as producer bringing the novel back to the screen.
Nineteen Eighty-Four was previously made into a film, directed by Michael Radford in the year 1984 with John Hurt starring as the lead, Winston Smith.
