Who Will Win “Best Actress?”

Here’s my pick:

Or maybe …

A long shot, I know, but the pull of the film noir fan in me is strong.

Who Will Win “Best Picture?”

If you listen to L.A. Times film critic Kenneth Turan, it’s “The Artist,” hands down.

Here’s his argument for the French-made, nearly silent celebration of Tinseltown’s first golden age:

“There is, however, one quality that “The Artist” does lack. It’s a quality that many Oscar winners, not to mention a number of this year’s best picture candidates, have in abundance, and that is an off-putting sense of self-importance, a ponderousness that trumpets to the world the undying significance of what has been put on screen.

“The Artist,” by way of contrast, has the grace to wear its considerably gifts lightly. Yes, it’s got charismatic acting, a deft directorial hand, beautiful black and white cinematography, entrancing music plus a story that touches any number of emotional bases, but you never catch it breaking a sweat to convince you of its virtues. Its beating heart is Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier who stars as a dog who makes doing it all look like it’s all in a day’s work.”

I’m going with “The Artist” for the win, with “The Descendants” as my dark horse favorite. Leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Hosting Your Own Oscars Party.

As film buffs get ready for Hollywood’s Very Big Night, Hollywood wants to know how film buffs will be spending their very big night.

The Guardian reports:

This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and TV network ABC, which broadcasts the ceremony, are extending the invite to the general public. Not just extending: actively pushing. With one eye on the increasingly swollen figures commanded for advert spots during the Super Bowl – as well as diminished viewing figures for last year’s ceremony – folks at home are being encouraged to look at Oscar Sunday as they do Super Bowl Sunday: a whole day of fun and food focused around a watercooler TV event.

This year, the extensive menu of themed canapes being cooked up for 1,600 A-listers by Austrian chef Wolfgang Puck, isn’t just being detailed online; recipes are shared, too. The public isn’t asked merely to gawp at Puck’s signature dish of a statuette-shaped smoked salmon flatbread with chive garnish and a dollop of caviar, but to recreate it for their ownOscars do. A photo shows the fishy nibbles under construction, complete with enormous pipette bag of cream cheese “glue”.

How are you spending Oscar night? My wife and I will be watching tonight on the couch, with maybe a plate of snacks and a couple of beers between us. Leave thoughts on your plans in the comments section.
