First Look: Poster for “Pitch Perfect,” starring Anna Kendrick.

It had to happen sometime — someone had to make a movie about a capella groups.

And here’s a synopsis:

“Fiercely competitive UMass undergraduate a capella groups Divisi (all girls) and Treblemakers (all boys) practice and perform throughout the year in the quest for the a capella nirvana: winning the “International Championship of Collegiate A Capella” (ICCA) that’s held each spring at Carnegie Hall. With Divisi undergoing some intense interpersonal strife–most of their members have graduated, singer Chloe has vocal chord nodes and their leader Aubrey (who tends to projectile puke when stressed) insists on keeping the group in its same old groove–the stakes are high, particularly with the inclusion of freshman-with-a-bad-attitude, Beca Mitchell, whose good ideas are routinely shot down by Aubrey. Beca is also trying hard not to fall in love with fellow freshman Jesse, a nice guy and a new member of the Trebles–whose guys are, according to the age-old Divisi tradition, off-limits to the Divisi girls.”

Report: Philip Seymour Hoffman offered role in “Hunger Games” sequel.

SlashFilm reports:

/Though most of the early casting rumors for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire have focused on handsome fan favorite Finnick Odair, the very first bit of reliable casting news involves a different character altogether — and, at least in my view, a much more exciting name than any we’ve heard so far for Finnick.

Various outlets are reporting that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the part of Plutarch Heavensbee, a new Gamemaker who plays a pivotal role in the next installment of the series. More details after the jump.

Friday the 13th (1980)

Good God … has it really been more than 30 years?

4-Word Review: Don’t reopen the campsite.

(This review contains spoilers. Lots of spoilers)

Twenty-two years after two counselors were brutally murdered Camp Crystal Lake reopens, but as the young staff tries to get the place ready they are killed one-by-one by an unknown assailant.

I first saw this film back in 1986 and thought it was alright. I presumed I would dislike it this time, but instead came away entertained and although certainly not a perfect film it does deserve its classic status. Director Sean S. Cunningham shows more flair than a lot of critics give him credit for. I liked the idea that all the murders take place during one stormy night at a remote location. Every murder sequence has its own beginning, middle, and end and filming it at an actual campsite gives it a lot of flavor. In…

New “Skyfall” images feature Daniel Craig looking pensive.

Here’s a couple of promo shots from the 23rd installment of the long-running spy franchise. As if you didn’t know, Daniel Craig returns as 007. “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes is at the helm.

New “Total Recall” posters go viral.

Here’s a look at two of the new posters for the “Total Recall” remake starring Colin Farrell.

I’m still not convinced the world needs a reboot of the Philip K. Dick short story that got turned into a noisy explosive mess in 1990 with Arnold Schwarzenegger. But I’ve been wrong before.

The Weekend Box Office And The 1,000th Post.

Good Monday Morning, Everyone.

The third installment of the “Madagascar” franchise stampeded to the top of the box office heap over the weekend, taking in $60.3 million, making it a more compelling moviegoing option than Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” which finished second with $50 million.

Is It Really 1,000 Posts Already?

So back in August 2010, I had this brainstorm. And it started with a moment of annoyance. Namely, I realized that I hadn’t been to the movies in ages and this cinema junkie was tired of missing out on the silver screen.

So I told my ever-patient wife that I was going to start a blog. The idea, I said, was to watch a movie every night and then write a review or essay about it. The idea was to eventually write a book about the state of modern cinema. What I’d forgotten was that it was also a campaign season and my day job as a political reporter quickly got in the way. The “watch a movie every night” thing lasted, maybe, a month, and then quickly fell by the wayside.

It was several months before I returned to this project again. And when I did, I decided to take it in an entirely different direction. Reviews and essays would still have their place, but, let’s face it, I’m a breaking news guy and I love being out in front with news stories, so I quickly decided to take the blog in a more hard news direction. I tried to be first with some of the stories on the new tentpole franchises coming out of Hollywood. And I also wanted to call attention to some of the smaller films also worth your hard-earned dollar or pound or deutschemarke or wherever you happen to be reading this morning.

I’ve been pleased with the results so far. And I’ve been lucky enough to come into contact with movie fans from across the globe. But here’s the thing: As the Cineaste’s Lament approaches its second birthday, I want to make the blog even better. So I’m throwing it open to you, the readers:

What do you want to see more of in this space? Long-form essays on film? Movie reviews? More breaking news? Less news about men in tights? More on classic cinema? You’re the readers. You’re why I’m here doing this — it sure isn’t for the cash. This is a labor of love and I love sharing that labor with you.

Leave your thoughts in the comments section and thanks again for all your support for the last 1,000 posts. Here’s to the next 1,000 and beyond.
