Dark Shadows

Medium:  Currently in Theaters

Rating:  2.5 (5-point system)

Dark Shadows.  Almost nobody my age can forget it.  It gnaws at you.  It takes you by the throat.  It leaves you thirsting for more.  But enough of the vampire clichés and puns.  Let’s talk a little about what this cultural phenomena was for those too young to have experienced it.

Dark Shadows started out as a gothicsoap opera back in 1966, and at first it was a certified bomb . Gothic didn’t sell back then, and Dark Shadows faced cancellation only six months after its debut.  Dan Curtis, the show’s creator, decided to go out in style, and suddenly ghosts started appearing . . . in a daytime soap opera!  But things didn’t really take off for Dark Shadows until 1967, with the introduction…

Why are blockbusters opening overseas first?

Here’s a great answer to a question that’s been plaguing me quite a bit this spring. The answer, logically enough, is money.

Why are blockbusters opening overseas first?

You may not have noticed yet, but you will soon. There is a new trend in the Hollywood release schedule. The Avengers, Piranha 3DD, Fast Five, Thor, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Battleship, and the upcoming James Bond movie Skyfall. What do each of these films have in common? They are opening overseas weeks before we get a chance to see them here in the U.S.

I did some digging and the driving force is simple and not surprising: money. Historically the United States has always premiered the big, popcorn movies first. Over the last decade or so things have changed and Hollywood has noticed. Take the D.O.A. picture Battleship, which I won’t even be renting it looks so awful. The film opened this weekend stateside, but has been out for over a month in many European…

Meanwhile, the New York Times profiles The Specialists Ltd., supplier of prop weapons to the stars.

Here’s the nut graf:

“If you’ve seen a gun in a New York film or TV show, chances are it came from here. Over the last 30 years, Mr. Washburn, 65, has gained a following as the man who can get pretty much any weapon on the planet. Or off: last year the company supplied “Men in Black 3,” due in theaters on Friday, with alien weaponry.

At any time, the company is arming a dozen or so television shows and three big films. The Specialists recently finished working on “One Shot,” the Tom Cruise thriller based on the popular Lee Child series of novels with Jack Reacher. One vault wall displays a half-dozen sniper rifles, all of which were used in the film. The company also provided weaponry to one of this summer’s most anticipated blockbusters, “The Dark Knight Rises,” the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.”

Gor

Anyone remember this one? Me neither … But wow, were there ever a lot of sword and sorcery movies made in the 1980s.

thesquonk's avatarForgotten Films

In the 80’s, there were tons of sword and sorcery flicks.  After “Conan the Barbarian” made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star in 1982, these movies were all over the Blockbuster Video shelves.  There was “Beastmaster,” “Deathstalker,” “Barbarian Queen,” and their many sequels.  Heck, if you were a film producer, had a couple of Playboy models on hand, and could get Boris Valejo to do the poster art for ya…you were halfway there!  A strange entry in this mini-genre is a 1987 film based on a series of erotic sci-fi fantasy books that boasts over thirty installments.  It’s time to journey to the world of “Gor.”

The film follows dweeby college professor Tarl Cabot (Urbano Barberini).  Cabot is the owner of a strange ring passed down through his family which, legend has it, can open up a portal to another world.  After being stood up by his girlfriend, Cabot finds out that…
