More Avengers News: Tom Hiddleston on Loki’s Fight Scenes.

It’s time for your daily dose of “Avengers” news. Today it’s English actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) very naughty brother Loki, weighing in on his fight scenes in the Joss Whedon-helmed superteam flick.

The revelations come via an interview with Brit film-mag TotalFilm:

“I had huge fun with Chris Evans, as Captain America, because super-soldier though he may be, he’s still a man, up against a God who in his own mind is infinitely superior. Then, in the ring with The Hulk, we’ve got this silver tongued, lightening quick mind up against the embodiment of rage..Loki has this mercurial, transformative ability, not just physically but intellectually, so not all the fights are purely physical. Mind games? Maybe..”

Report: Mark Millar Confirms That “Kick Ass 2” Will Shoot This Summer.

TotalFilm has the story:

“Kick-Ass 2 has been in the pipeline ever since the first film revealed its cliffhanger ending, but only now have production details been officially confirmed, with Mark Millar telling The Daily Record that filming will begin in the summer.

Millar is the man who penned the Kick-Ass comic books, and so is well placed to give an update on the film. “We shoot Kick-Ass 2 and American Jesus this summer,” he told the newspaper, before going on to elaborate on the latter project.

“It’s the reverse of The Omen,” he explains, “which is about a kid who finds out he is the anti-Christ. This is a kid who finds out he is Jesus Christ.”

Paying Tribute To Dario Argento.

Italian horror director Dario Argento (L.A. Times photo)

In addition to giving the world his daughter, the comely Asia Argento, Italian film director Dario Argento is also responsible for some of the creepiest (read: best) horror films in modern cinema.

Writing in the L.A. Times’Hero Complex” blog, Gina McIntyre takes a look at what makes the filmmaker, who’s been called Italia’s answer to Alfred Hitchcock, tick. It’s part of a three-day tribute to Argento that kicked off on Sunday (19 Feb) and culminates Tuesday.

Here’s the nut graf:

“On Sunday, Argento will be on hand for a late-afternoon screening of his 1977 film “Suspiria,” followed by a 25-minute preview of his project “Dracula 3D” starring Rutger Hauer. Additionally, his 1971 feature “The Cat O’ Nine Tails” and his 1996 film, “The Stendhal Syndrome,” will screen during the festival’s weeklong run, and the filmmaker is scheduled to lecture at USC on Tuesday.

That night, he will receive the festival’s lifetime achievement award at the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles. Born in Rome to a filmmaker father and photographer mother, Argento was a film critic until, at age 20, he co-wrote his first screenplay with Bernardo Bertolucci, 1968′s “Once Upon a Time in the West.” He transitioned to directing with “The Bird with the Crystal Plumage” and went on to build a reputation for his violent, masterful Giallo films, pulpy horror mysteries that depicted their grim subject matter with unflinching flair.

With The Oscars almost upon us, New York Times film critics A.O. Scott and Mahnola Dargis take a look at an awards ceremony they describe as both trivial and essential. It’s true, really. No one ever really remembers who won Best Picture a year after the awards show is over. But, still, they are an important way of setting artistic priorities.

They write:

“The Academy Awards seem to demand more attention each year, and one way to pay attention to them is to complain about them. Oscar cynicism has become its own special form of Oscar hype, and I wonder sometimes if the whole thing — the nominating process, the heavily publicized tweaks in the rules, the dreary broadcast and the endless drudgery of the “season” — is exasperating on purpose. The louder we criticize, the more we must care.

I think that underneath all the empty pomp and hyperventilating coverage there is something worth caring about. Yes, the Academy often recognizes mediocrity and overlooks excellence. Yes, the documentary and foreign language film categories are hobbled by ridiculous rules that seem designed to exclude some of the best work. (This year’s scandalous doc omissions include “The Interrupters,” “Tabloid” and “Into the Abyss,” but that’s the subject of another rant.) Yes, the show goes on too long, with too many bad jokes and not enough moments of genuine emotion or surprise. Yes, Hollywood is a swamp of vanity, myopia and bad taste. But it is also a community of hard-working and talented people who approach this annual ritual of self-congratulation with a sincere spirit of respect for the labor of others and reverence for the traditions that bring them together.”
