Detachment: International Trailer

Here’s the new international trailer for “Detachment” starring Adrien Brody, Marcia Gay Harden, William Peterson and Tim Blake Nelson.

And via Brit film site HeyUGuys, here’s a quick synopsis of the film:

“Detachment is a chronicle of three weeks in the lives of several high school teachers, administrators and students through the eyes of a substitute teacher named Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody). Henry’s method of imparting vital knowledge onto his temporary students is interrupted by the arrival of three women in his life.”

First Look: Lynn Collins in “John Carter.”

Here’s your first look at the leading lady in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic pulp hero.

Via Brit film site HeyUGuys:

… Collins was brilliant in Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine spin-off in the X-Men franchise, and I’m really looking forward to seeing them reunited on the screen for this. (Granted, they didn’t share any screen time in Wolverine, to the best of my recollection, but still.) Along with Kitsch and Collins, the film will star Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, Dominic West, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, and Ciarán Hinds.
John Carter is set to be with us in 3D on 9th March next year, which means we’ve got less than three months before we see this all unfold on the big screen. I have a feeling it’s going to be pretty epic.”

“Titanic” Gets A 3D Makeover.

"Yes, Leo. I am afraid you're going to have to drown in 3D."

Remember the schmaltz. Remember Billy Zane (Anyone, anyone?). Remember how shockingly awful and terrifying it was to watch thousands of people perish in the icy depths?

James Cameron does. It got him an Oscar and stuff.  And now he’s re-releasing it in 3D. Why? Because he can. And you have no choice but to go along with it.

Or not.

Here’s the trailer.

And here’s an absolutely hilarious and merciless take-down by The Guardian’s Stuart Heritage on the nakedness of this particular cash-in.

Easter Eggs In “The Dark Knight Rises” Trailer.

Our Friends At Slash Film …
… have gone over the footage for the new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer like it’s the Zapruder film and have come away with what appear to be some serious Easter eggs lurking within.

OK … Serious spoilers ahead, so you’ve been warned. Here we go:

1

2

3

The first of these apparently involve some reference to Robin — who director Christopher Nolan has sworn will not appear in his Bat-film. But with Nolan, you can never tell about these things. Here’s the photographic evidence on offer:

A stretch? You call it.

And here’s one involving Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman) that someone has apparently put epic levels of processor power into:

Once again, make of these what you will.

Bill Hicks’ Missing “Letterman” Appearance.

Not strictly movie-related, I know. But this comes as a belated Happy Birthday to the late comedian, who would have turned 50 years old this year.

Over on Slate, David Hoaglund makes a persuasive argument for why Hicks still matters.

Here’s the nut graf:

“As often happens with such things, the decision to cut Hicks’s bit got him more publicity than airing it ever would have: He told Lahr it brought “more attention than my other eleven appearances on Letterman times one hundred.” He got even more when Lahr’s [New Yorker] profile ran soon afterward, as he told the writer in a letter which was reproduced on the wonderful blog Letters of Note last month. “The phones are ringing off the hook, the offers keep pouring in, and all because of you,” Hicks said. He told Lahr he had read another piece of his, one in which Lahr referred to the “calm that gives rise to greatness in Art.”

Anyone else remember the days when stand-up comedy was actually dangerous?

What’s Your Favorite Holiday Movie?

We celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah here at Cineaste World HQ. And just about one of my favorite ways to spend the holiday is hunkered down in front of the big screen with some of my favorite holiday fare.

Must-views hereabouts include Richard Curtis’ 2003 ensemble comedy “Love Actually” for the charming scenes featuring Hugh Grant as a stand-in for pre-Iraq War Tony Blair.

Another old favorite: the Bill Murray-starring “Scrooged,” which is made perfect, in my opinion, by a positively rabid performance by Carol Kane as one of the Christmas ghosts.

Which got me to thinking: What’s your favorite holiday movie? Choose from the answers in the handy poll below. Or, if there’s one you think I overlooked, leave your thoughts in the comments box.
